|
|
|
This summer, Microsoft plans to buy Epic Games for the sum of $1 billion.
Travis Moses, magazin assistant editor for GamePro said:
"Microsoft will buy Epic Games for $1 billion this summer. Microsoft has lots of cash on hand, and in buying Epic, could collect royalty rights for Unreal technology across other platforms."
The relationship between Microsoft and Epic Games is already pretty tight. Microsoft invested a few millions of dollars into the development of Gears of War.
This shows that Microsoft clearly wants more. Epic Games is licensing its Unreal Engine to quite a few companies that develop games on PC, PlayStation and X-Box. This is an important source of royalties.
With Microsoft in control of the Unreal Engine, this would question the future of the portability of this one. It's no secret that Microsoft is not really a Linux fan. So will future releases of Unreal Tournament still offer a Linux port and a Linux dedicated server? And what about the current and long awaited Linux port of Unreal Tournament 3 for Linux?

Mark Rein just reacted on this:
"I have not seen the actual GamePro article but if they're going to make predictions about us selling Epic we would prefer if they started at $2 billion because we don't want anyone thinking that we're cheap. "

I can't see this going through and hopefully will not go thru at all.
Microsoft have their own gaming platform anda their own game studio ... I see no reason for them to buy Epic.

think that's the general idea of taking over something, to make profit, why else would they be interested in buying things

Yes indeed.
I think microsofts stragedy is to get further into the gaming scene.
They've become a big player for games to run on - Window based PC's and the XBOX/XBOX 360.
They've only really had one successful game so far and that is Halo.
They must of seen the preview for UT3 which I shall be buying for my sexbox360 next week

Yeah. Other games just kick UT's ass now tbh. If you compared CoD4 to UT3, I think most people would pick CoD4 as their favourite.

I dunno...
How many maps can you download for COD4 to play?
I can see UT3 taking over COD4 on xbox360 at least, as I believe custom maps are available on UT3.

I think COD 4 is just way easier to copy (Especially the PC version is copied a lot, I heard) and easier to run on most PC's, which makes the game far more popular. And least but not least; COD4 is a finished game, while UT 3 is still being built with patches....

Nah not really. I checked and found out that the specs for both games are pretty much the same.
And Unreal engine 3 is much much more userfriendly for mappers. So there most likely will be more custom maps build for UT 3 then COD 4
