grandfather? i think you mean uncle or perhaps cousin?
grandfather = your son/daughter has son/daughter
uncle = your brother/sisters children
cousin = your aunt/uncles children

not GRANDFATHER but GODFATHER, LMAO
In belgium we call it 'Peter or Meter'
So, if somebody in the family or a friend are having a baby, they can choose a person who is the 'Peter & Meter' from their baby.
Then the 'peter & meter' buys presents for holidays and the way back.
But we are also witnesses at the baptism(?) :p and if the baby loses his parents we have to take care for him etc...
