I use an upgraded open gl dll for UT, which gives me MUCH smoother gameplay on UT, though it does need a more powerful graphics card....
edit: yeah I know I can't type accurately and fast...

OpenGL and Direct3D are two different ways to render 3-dimensional graphics, like in games. OpenGl is open source whereas Direct3D is property of Microsoft and closed source.
But don't ask me which one is better
Here you can find good custom versions of both opengl and direct3d for UT:
http://cwdohnal.home.mindspring.com/utglr/
Make sure you also check out the settings page:
http://cwdohnal.home.mindspring.com/utglr/settings.html
Try both and keep the one which fits your needs

You may need to edit your unrealtournament.ini to get tha best out of either driver. For example, if I use d3d then it can be quite jerky when playin' but I had to change my v-sync settin' to true to overcome this.
I find that d3d givez better fps, in UT it displayz at 150, but for me that is not important as my monitor only refreshez at 60 anyway, but opengl makez it easy for me to swap between UT/Windowz without any problemz, handy when I get a PM on mirc

I was using OpenGL for a long time coz a friend told me its way better, plus i had that window switching problem too, it took like 30-60 seconds for direct3d to switch windows - quite annoying.
But the updated direct3d8 version i mentioned above is faster and it switches windows as fast as opengl, so i use d3d now

never got openGL working properly, with all kinds of openGL drivers.
Direct3D I also had the jerky movement at the start, but I managed to resolve that, and I'm playing at direct 3D as I have always done.

i prefer to play with openGL coz i can get a higher FPS with it. But tbh its just what you prefer, one swears to openGL others to d3d. With all the hardware from nowadays it doesnt really matters, coz most all got the power to run UT very smoothly

opengl makes your mouse smoother
d3d jerks up when you don't use vsync to lock the fps.
