So I always thought this was impossible to do without 'stopping' even for an extremely small time unless some kind of 3rd party device or macro was being used.

Today I saw someone doing it and it always looks suspicious, so when I questioned them I got the answer 'I can push the buttons without them making a sound', which tbh I don't fully understand, but I guess they meant they can double tap without making a normal or 'full' keystroke. Other people got involved and said that maybe the player is fast at double tapping.

This was on an FBT server, but the reason I ask here is that more skilled and veteran players play here and it is your advice I am after. So, is it possible to do this with 'normal' UT techniques?

I wouldn't be surprised if the guy you spoke to was using a macro, there are many 'cheaters' around nowadays. I think what he means though is, like my keyboard, if you push a key all the way down and then raise your finger slightly so you're only applying a tiny bit of pressure you aren't actually pressing the key anymore, even though it's pushed down.. Then you can just apply a bit more pressure again and done fast enough that should qualify as a double tap.
That method can be much faster if you're just using the forward key alone and not making use of your strafe keys.. I don't recommend that method for moving front dodges though.. I'm pretty sure it's impossible to only use your forward key alone, without any strafe keys, and front dodge without stopping for a very very small amount of time.
I, and I'm sure many other front dodgers do it by making use of your strafe keys.. Ugh this is going to be hard to explain Razz.

Okay so you're running in a straight line, look 90 degrees to the left and strafe right so you're still moving in the same direction but looking in a different direction. Then while holding your strafe key you flick your mouse to right and double tap your forward key and you should be doing a front dodge in the direction you've been heading the whole time without stopping.
It takes a while to get good at it to the point where it can actually benefit you.. When you do get good at it though and are able to do it fast it benefits a lot in shorter corridors where you can't quite fit a side dodge..
Most of the time when people try to do that they just end up running around like some kind of confused chicken and do a really off-angle dodge.
Strafing is key to doing any sort of moving front dodge.

Anyway you don't need a 3rd party device or a macro to do a moving front dodge, I assure you when you get good at strafing you can do what i explained above really fast and it looks like a nonstop front dodge... That's the best I could explain it Razz.

Thanks Crunchy for the detailed tutorial about how to dodge :p This player was not using strafe at all, perhaps I should of mentioned that, my bad.

So, it seems you're under the same as impression as myself, front flipping whilst using the forward key to move is pretty much impossible without some kind of stopping (or cheating). This player was doing it as regular as clockwork so unless they have really sensitive fingers I can't imagine the method you mention (quoted above) works that regularly. For me at least, dodging is quite a frantic operation, and getting that level of perfection of applying a tiny bit of pressure so often and so accurately seems beyond my capabilities and understanding.

Anyway, I would still like some more opinions about this, if anyone has them.

Haha I was just trying to point out it is possible to do a moving front dodge without using any kind of macro by using your strafe keys Smile. I guess I did start a mini tutorial.. Embarassed
But yes without any strafe keys I agree that sounds suspicious.

if he did without at least a small stop, as you describe, I do not think it's possible. Well, at least for me it isn't.

I have seen it done pretty convincingly by some players. I remember d3ssi used to be good at running front dodges like that. But, indeed why would you not just side dodge? It definately sounds a bit suspicious.

Well, I found out that this player has used a dodgebot in the recent past, that's all the convincing I need. Thanks for your replies and help Smile

It's worth noting that you can dodge faster if you use two foward buttons instead of one, but you have to have very good reactions.

Indeed he was. I never undertood it either how it was possible. That only cuz I can't do it tho. I'm pretty sure it's doable without macro's. If that's yoru playstyle.

But yes... dess was superb at it. and probably still is ;D

We have tested that years ago with Medic because I had some doubts too.
Our conclusion was that it is possible to run and front flip without using external help like macros.
Of course, that does not mean everybody is clean on the subject but as those type of players can't stop cheating, they will be caught in some other way sooner or later.

I was thinking that it would be possible to use a gamepad to dodge really fast. Those keys can be pushed much quicker than a keyboard's keys. And some joysticks would make it really easy to dodge. And you could definately make it so that you could be moving (but with the joystick) and have forward mapped to another key so that you could doubletap it and dodge while still using the joystick to move. That would make sense that you wouldn't really be able to side dodge as well, unless right and left were mapped too but that would be crazy confusing to play like that (having to push other keys to dodge). You could also maybe map both joysticks so you usually use one to move but you could dodge really fast using two sticks.

I am wondering why you don't set right and left turn to right strafe and left strafe and skip pushing the strafe button just double tap right or left?
