|
|
|
The demo of UT3 has been available a bit prematurely - generating quite a lot of fuzz in the community. Download links started to emerge early this afternoon, while it was planned to be released at 9pm (CET).
I managed to set up a mirror server relatively early for the demo - making my bandwidth usage explode in a few minutes. The situation is somewhat stabilized now, so I'm taking a bit of time to write this very short review.
I will only say a couple of things about the demo - as I don't really have the time to write a full review, nor really had the time to thoroughly try the game yet. Hopefuly, your comments will complete my couple of notes about the game.
Loading the game doesn't need too much time and I especially liked the UI which is very good looking, simple, fast and straightforward. I tweaked my settings in no time.
One thing you may want to check out is that your files are not set as read-only, otherwise your settings will be lost the next time you start the demo. However, it seems that some settings still reset on each launch.
Unfortunately, there is no simple CTF game type in the demo. Vehicle CTF is there though, with DM, TDM and Duel.
The game runs pretty smoothly even if you don't have a top-notch system. Having all the details enabled are not required to have fun.
The global feeling from UT players about the UT3 demo seems rather positive - which should be a good thing.
Time will tell...

General experience
I do like it to some extend (at this very moment), but i find it really hard to already give good feedback on this demo as i'm so used to UT99, the first game i ever played actively online!
Being so used to UT99 it's just so hard to compare this game. Although ofcourse UT3 is 8 years later and the graphics are absolutely amazing.
Play: Very hard to judge for me as i only played UT online in the past and only instagib ctf and dm. I never seriously played with normal weapons. Crosshair is huge :p
Vehicles: not needed for me, i mean it's not COD or anything. So i hope non vehicle servers will be online too.
Overall impression: Very nice looking game with a nice flow, but maybe a bit too much to the UT99 lovers? Next to that... i kind of fear for the community of UT players we have now. Ofcourse the 99 players will be around but also a lot of new players will be attracted ( can't stop that from happening) Guess it should be ok in the end as we all started as 'new' players. Even i did 2.5 years ago. We'll see i'm planning to buy it as soon as the UT3 server here on i4games is launched and fairly populated with the people i like

it looks ok, though it still seems like the whole idea is still the same as 2k3/4 which I didn't like.
If my PC will run it, i will know more... but I doubt it will.

Too bad there is not just a CTF mode, the InstaGib mutator and a dedicated Linux server available. Otherwise, we could have compared the gameplays much better.

I think the game is just fine but however I still dislike some things like:
- The fact that you can't adjust your sensetivity precisely as you want.
- The fact that you can't dodge and slide against crooked walls like we are used to in bunny track.
- And the fact there's a sniper rifle and no lightning gun which i like more.
But so far I don't hate it yet.
and last but not least a screen of my first online ut3 match

To be honest after playing the demo, with relativelyt good expectations ... I wasn't over excited about it.
To me the game was too similar in appearance and feel to UT2004. Whereas graphics is excellent, and customisation is brilliant, the game doesnt produce a significant leap from UT2004, not even a step.
Admittedly the physics have been changed to feel less "floaty" in ut3. It feels faster paced and more how ut2k4 i felt should have been.
Some of the weapons have been altered to such a degree that they are actually useless i.e. minigun secondary, enforcer, shock is identical to ut2k4, link gun is slightly more powerful, and rockets have been weakened slightly, the sniper is also awful. Although there is no insta mod in the demo it would be interesting to see how the change in physics would affect it.
Overall i don't get much of a different feeling playing the game to ut2004, the only thing i get confused with is double dodging, as i feel like im actually playing ut2k4 and not a different game.
I grade it C-, nice graphics, good gameplay but not original enough, it doesnt have that "ut" feeling.

IM SOLD! its NOT UT its visually stunning The movement is different its never going to be exactly the same. Its alot closer to UT than it is 2k4, i like the movement and game play its every thing 2k4 was not, its fun to play and when its released i will be saying bub bye to UT after a very long run.
Don't get me wrong UT's good but its just getting slowly smaller
and older. Looking forward to helping build a BT based community. Its a fresh start with a lot of possibilities and new things to come.

Game Movement
The game movement is great. Not at all like UT2k3/2k4. The only similarity is the fact that the double jump still exists, but as someone already commented, it's not too exaggurated and floaty like in 2k3/2k4. The feign death looks more realistic, you're body goes all floppy and you fall down looking dead, not like in UT99 where you just look like you're laying down. :] (not that many people try and feign their death) In Vehicle CTF the new hoverboard is amazing, it's really fast, and you can use it when you have the flag also, unlike some of the vehicles in game. Also with the hoverboard you can grapple onto a moving vehicle you're team mate is driving and "skitch" a ride. Which i think is going to be great in wars. It's going to involve more people in it. Like people who can't frag really well may be good enough to controll a vehicle and help the team out at least. Which is definately a plus. Disappointments are the dodges that can be used in BT as someone again mentioned. Also you get hurt when falling even onto a crooked wall too. (I guess UT3 is not going to be made for BT unless someone creates some sort of mods that stop you from hurting yourself too)
Graphics
The graphics are visually stunning. Looks so real. The textures are great. The whole environment is like a cut diamond The water looks more real, even when you go underneath it, it becomes blurry as if you were actually underwater.
Game Modes that I played
vCTF, is something more new to me and reminds me alot of Halo, as I never played with vehicles on 2k4 either. It's alot of fun and as I explained above the skitching is good, guess you need alot of communication is pull it off and make it work. The Hoverboard actually replaces the translocator as a way of providing a fast way to get around a large map. Works really well imo too!
Deathmatch, was nice, I particularly liked the sniper rifle, the zoom is made nice and easy to see. (I used to come from an old sniper clan before I got into insta) and I think my old team mates will definately be buying UT3 just for that, they can have alot of fun with it
Weapons(This bit i nicked from wiki with some of my own comments in too)
The weapons in UT3 are similar to the ones in UT2k4. Returning weapons include the AVRiL, Bio Rifle, Flak Cannon, Link Gun, Rocket Launcher, Shock Rifle, and Sniper Rifle. There are also two superweapons, the Redeemer and the Target Painter. (Although I havent seen the Target Painter in game yet). From the original UT, the Dual Enforcers and Impact Hammer replace the Assault Rifle and Shield Gun. and the dual enforcers are nice to use aswell. Although the impact hammer is more to disable the moving vehicles with it's alt fire which is an EMP (bit like in the matrix eh?) xD
I was a bit disappointed that the demo did not have instagib on it, as that is the main game that I play because I extremely suck at normal weapons, but I guess this game plays different and it's something I can get used to. Also was a bit disappointed at the fact there was no normal CTF on it too, but the hoverboard won me over with the vCTF, so this game is a must imo. :]
So there you have it, I give the game play 8/10, the grahpics 10/10. :]
Fire, over and out.
(Edit: think inis are harder to grasp too, lol)
(Edit again: Forgot to mention, the wall jump is included in the game aswell)

I don't understand any of that :/ You mean you fear the UT99 community will migrate to UT3, or that new players will bypass UT99 and go straight for UT3....OR that our UT99 community may have more new players as a result of people trying UT3 and then trying the original predecessor (UT99.)
Wtf Vainkey?! lol.
Btw my PC is way too old, and UT3 would be a big reason for me to upgrade, so it's nice that the movement seems good from what I've read.

But can you side-dodge and forward-dodge on the ground? And you can still side-dodge up flat ramps as they aren't crooked?

Just to clear up the false statement about slanted surfaces and dodging you CAN dodge up ramps like in BT. Next thing people will be saying is that you cant lift jump any more :S lol
